Research-Based Animation Film Production
Students are introduced to the methods of research-through-design and art-based-research, and use these methods to create a research document for their graduation project. This involves (1) formulating thematic, narrative and artistic research questions; (2) analysis of written and artistic sources; and (3) experimentation into the styling and (extended) narrative of their project. The resulting report, consisting of a written and an (audio)visual component, can be used as both a research paper (and as such a first step towards their dissertation), and a blueprint for a development dossier. It delineates the narrative, stylistic, thematic, technical and expressive choices the student makes, and will serve as a basis, in the next stages, for the creation of a script, storyboard, concept art and animation tests. The report also includes a first synopsis of the proposed project, and a declaration of intent of the director (artistic approach) and the screenwriter (narrative approach).
